Hans Merensky Nature Reserve is a mere 50 minute drive from Coach House. This reserve is popular amongst guests wanting to get closer to nature. The Great Letaba River, which passes through the Han Merensky Nature Reserve, is home the hippopotamus and crocodile.This water source also attracts a large diversity of bird life all year round and is a great day out for bird watching enthusiasts. For the more adventurous there are different hiking trails to explore, one being the 1km Mopane Interpretive Trail and the other being the 32 km Letaba Trail.
For the less adventurous, the nature reserve provides guided tours throughout the day and at sunset. Horseback trails are also a favourite amongst the guest visiting the nature reserve, these rides are led by a professional guide. For those who enjoy the laid-back facets of nature, the many picnic spots that offer panoramic views of the Reserves flora and fauna.
The Kruger National Park was established in 1898 in order to protect wildlife. The park is a total of 2 million hectares and is home to a large biodiversity that includes over 507 birds species, 147 species of mammal, 337 trees, 49 fish species, 34 amphibians and over 114 reptiles.
The Kruger National Park is popular for guests visiting Africa as this reserve is home to Africa's famous "Big 5". The "Big 5" gained infamy through the first explorers and big game hunters on the continent. These animals were categorised as the five most dangerous animals to hunt on foot in Africa and accounted for many a fatal hunting encounter and shattered nerves. The "Big 5" that can be spotted in the Kruger National Park are: Elephant, Rhino, Buffalo, Lion and Leopard.
